This year, fromย June 27th to July 18th, ICFF will celebrate two major milestones; the tenth-anniversary edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival and the second edition of the Lavazza Drive-In Film Festival, organized in collaboration with CHIN Radio/TV.

The Festival, in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will also maintain its special focus on Italian contemporary cinema through notable screenings in several major Canadian cities and virtual experiences offered nationwide through the ICFF digital platform.

Both festivals will take place at Ontario Place in Toronto and in several other cities throughout Canada, including Vaughan, and Montreal.

The ICFF Festival will be a hybrid of in-person and online events available to viewers all across Canada.

The festivals are presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in Canada, the Consulates General of Italy in Canada and the Istituti Italiani di Cultura in Canada.

TFCA Awards

TFCA Awards 2019

TORONTO โ€“ The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open โ€“ a drama directed by Kathleen Hepburn and Elle-Mรกijรก Tailfeathers about a friendship between two Indigenous women from different social backgrounds โ€“ has won the Toronto Film Critics Associationโ€™s 2019 Rogers Best Canadian Film Award along with its $100,000 purse.โ€จ

The award is the richest annual film prize in Canada. It was presented to director Kathleen Hepburn and director/co-star Elle-Mรกijรก Tailfeathers by author and feminist heroine Margaret Atwood, whose dystopian novel The Handmaidโ€™s Tale inspired the culturally-impactful series that will soon shoot a fourth season in Toronto.

TFCA Awards

The Body Remembers When the World Broke Openย is an adventurous work shot in real time on 16mm film. It co-starsย Violet Nelsonย as a pregnant young woman fleeing an abusive relationship and was previously named one of the top 10 Canadian movies of the year by the Toronto International Film Festival.

ย โ€จAs runners-up, Antigone director Sophie Deraspe and Firecrackers director Jasmin Mozaffari each received $5,000 from Rogers Communications.

Hosted by TIFF Artistic Director and Co-Headย Cameron Bailey, the ceremony took place at a gala dinner held January 9, 2020 at The Omni King Edward Hotel in Toronto with a cocktail reception sponsored by Cineplex Entertainment.โ€จย โ€จโ€œThe title is poetic, but the story is grounded in the bone-deep reality that animates the best of Canadian film,”ย TFCA Presidentย Peter Howellย said ofย The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open.ย “TFCA members responded to its empathy, honesty and social currency, as will anyone who views it.”โ€จย โ€จโ€œItโ€™s incredibly satisfying to see the TFCAโ€™s critics celebrate a vital Indigenous story directed by two women working on the cutting edge of Canadian cinema,โ€ย saidย Rogers Vice-Chairย Phil Lind.ย โ€œTheย originality, emotional power and sheer nerve ofย The Body Remembers When the World Broke Openย is exactly what this award is designed to encourage.”ย โ€จ

At the gala, actorsย Sarah Gadonย (Alias Grace,ย True Detective) andย Kaniehtiio Hornย (Letterkenny, Mohawk) introduced messages of thanks from winners, including videos from triple winner, directorย Bong Joon-hoย (Parasite)ย and Best Actor winnerย Adam Driverย (Marriage Story), and a message fromย Steven Zaillian, Best Screenplay winner forย The Irishman.โ€จ

Traci Melchor, senior correspondent for CTVโ€™s etalk, handed the award forย Best Animated Featureย to directorย Chris Butlerย forย Missing Link. The stop-motion film from Portlandโ€™s Laika studios had already won a Golden Globe earlier in the week.โ€จย โ€จHost Bailey presented theย Allan King Documentary Awardย toย Yiqian Zhang, co-producer ofย American Factory,ย Steven Bognarย andย Julia Reichertโ€™s film about a Chinese company that takes over a shuttered GM plant in Ohio, and the cultural clashes that followed in the workplace.โ€จย

Actorย Amanda Brugelย (The Handmaidโ€™s Tale, Kimโ€™s Convenience) presented actor-directorย Deragh Campbellย with the $10,000ย Stella Artois Jay Scott Prizeย for an emerging artist.ย Campbell has starred inย Sofia Bohdanowiczโ€™s trilogyย Never Eat Alone,ย Veslemรธy’s Songย andย MS Slavic 7, co-directing the latter. In 2019, she starred inย Anne at 13,000 Ft., which received a jury honourable mention at the Toronto International Film Festival.โ€จย โ€จIn its mission to recognize new voices in film criticism, the TFCA gaveย Victor Stiffย the second annualย RBC TFCA Emerging Critic Award,ย presented to him by Canadian comedy legendย Rick Mercer. Stiff is a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer-approved critic who is an editor at thatshelf.com and intheseats.ca and a contributor to several online film outlets

As well, the TFCA gave a special citation to the Canadian independent film distributor Mongrel Media, honouring its 25 years of โ€œmaking the Canadian cinematic landscape a richer, more adventurous place.โ€ In the absenceย of Mongrel founderย Hussain Amarshi, TFCA Presidentย Peter Howellย led applause for a film distributor that “has immeasurably enriched and enlivened the Canadian film scene,” with its support for such national talents asย Sarah Polley,ย Deepa Mehtaย andย Jennifer Baichwalย and international stars likeย Abbas Kiarostami,ย Joel and Ethan Coen,ย Ken Loachย andย Michael Haneke.โ€จย โ€จRichard Crouse, host of the CTV talk showย Pop Life, and prominent celebrity TV-interviewerย Teri Hartย welcomedย eminent members of the film industry, civic and cultural community on the red carpet, including Atwood, Mercer and Butler, TIFF co-head and executive directorย Joana Vicente,ย actressย Nahรฉmaย Ricciย (Antigone) and former TIFF COO and brand-builderย Michรจleย Maheux,ย recipient of this yearโ€™s Technicolor Clyde Gilmour Award. That award came with a pay-it-forward grant of $50,000 in production services to a rising filmmaker, which Maheux presented toย Lina Rodriguez. Veteran filmmakerย Don McKellarย (Last Night,ย Through Black Spruce) presented the award.

The TFCA is extremely grateful to founding sponsorย Rogers Communicationsย for the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award, to returning sponsorsย Labattย for the Stella Artois Jay Scottย Prize for an emerging artist, toย Technicolor Creative Servicesย for the Technicolor Clyde Gilmour Award, and toย Cineplex Entertainmentย for the Cineplex cocktail reception. The TFCA thanksย Air Canadaย as the official airline sponsor andย RBCย for the Emerging Critic Award. The TFCA also thanksย champagne sponsorย Perrier-Jouรซt,ย The Globe and Mail,ย Zoomer Magazine,ย Chair-man Mills,ย TAXI Canadaย and welcomes new official hotel sponsorย The Omni King Edward Hotel.โ€จย โ€จ(Under the TFCAโ€™s guidelines, contenders eligible for the awards include films released in Canada in 2019 plus films that qualify for the 2019 Oscars and have Canadian distribution scheduled by the end of February 2020.)โ€จย โ€จAbout the Toronto Film Critics Associationโ€จEstablished in 1997, theย Toronto Film Critics Associationย is comprised of Toronto based journalists and broadcasters who specialize in film criticism and commentary. All major dailies, weeklies and a variety of other print and electronic outlets are represented.โ€จย โ€จThe TFCA is affiliated with the International Federation of International Film Critics (FIPRESCI).
